Project role: executive architect, project manager
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has constructed an ambitious new 72,000 sf operating suite of 21 operating rooms in the middle of a tight urban campus. The 6th floor Perioperative Platform consists of the following project elements:
- 21 OR's including 1 ioMRI and 2 HDR rooms - 72,000 sf spread over 5 buildings, including new Infill- 52 bed pre-op/PACU; swing space during peak periods- Full PACS and CIMS systems - real time audio and visual communication between OR's and Pathology as
well as radiology and other departments. Full
broadcast capabilities; can broadcast to the world
via internet.
- cameras and microphones in booms
- custom corian documentation stations allow for staff
to visualize procedure(s) while documenting
- wall of knowledge, part of CIMS provides surgeon
realtime patient info and vitals and can show PACS
and other images to surgeon while operating
- custom molded corian scrub sinks
- 5th Avenue corridor (sterile corridor) - high end
finishes include corian base, tough coat wall finish
simulating Italian plaster, wall sconces, d'acoustics
barrel-vaulted ceiling with indirect lighting
- OR's in groupings of 4 to 6, share sterile cores
- OR's layout almost identical so that staff will not
have to adapt to different rooms
Quotes
"There were several miraculous feats that were accomplished in this project. One, the building took place over an occupied space including our existing surgical suites. Two, building the massive truss and "super-column" structure with out incident! Another, the delivery of 21 high tech operating suites with exquisite patient and staff friendly environments that have been welcomed by everyone."
- George Mejias, Director of Design & Construction
"The operating rooms now match the innovative qualities of our surgical teams and provide them with the opportunity to expand their substantial skills even further."
- Dr. David P. Jaques, FACS, Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery
