Project role: planner, architect, interior designer
North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System introduced a state-of-the-art, 24-bed private inpatient unit located on the 9th floor of the Monti Pavilion on their North Shore University Hospital campus. The renovation of this facility focused on providing a flexible clinical environment that is readily adaptable to future emerging trends in healthcare delivery and technology while being responsive to patients, families and staff.
One of the challenges of the project was creating an innovative plan that worked within the constraints of an existing structure. The solution was to extend the perimeter walls two feet into the existing corridor to increase the footprint of the patient rooms, while maintaining the required clearances for the corridors.
An opening in the center of the core guides ideal circulation through the unit and provides a central work area for staff. The swirling design expressed in the ceiling, floor pattern and casework provides relief and interest in an otherwise uninteresting long corridor. Lighting in the corridors is achieved from several indirect sources while separate switching allows flexibility for light levels at night. Full height decorative paneling embellishes the corridor walls and also serve as wall protection.
Colors and materials reminiscent of nature were utilized throughout the unit to create a soothing atmosphere. The recurrent theme of nature is supported in the color pallet of the glass tile wall covering inside alcoves and wood paneling. The patient room design characteristics also support a therapeutic healing environment to reduce stress and anxiety.
The importance of the "family as a caregiver" is encouraged by the spacious rooms and amenities provided such as a sleep sofa within the seating area, desk with computer outlet, refrigerator, TV, fold away dining table, shelving and storage to support both the patient and the family.
