Campus Plan
Project role: project manager, master planner, architect, interior designer
Susquehanna Health is a three-hospital system with a long-standing tradition of providing high quality healthcare and promoting wellness to families throughout the northeast Pennsylvania region. Our professional relationship with the System began in the early 1980's when the Williamsport Hospital & Medical Center was a stand alone hospital and Granary Associates was providing planning, architecture, interior design and project management services for their 175,000 SF expansion and renovation project.
Over the years our relationship grew and in 2005, Granary Associates began working with Susquehanna Health to evaluate several options for the evolution of their hospital campuses. Challenged with the age and condition of the existing facilities, Susquehanna Health wished to undertake a significant modernization, expansion and reconfiguration. The options included building a new facility on a "greenfield" site on the outskirts of Williamsport that would replace both The Williamsport Hospital & Medical Center and Divine Providence Hospital or undertaking major construction projects at one or more of their existing campuses.
Recognizing that The Williamsport Hospital & Medical Center could potentially vacate their existing facility, city officials quickly reacted to support the Hospital in their desire to grow within the downtown community. After considering a number of factors including market perception, staff concerns and overall cost constraints, Susquehanna Health elected to invest in their existing campuses by undertaking a core expansion at The Williamsport Hospital & Medical Center and reconfiguring services at Divine Providence Hospital as well as upgrading existing facilities at Muncy Valley Hospital. The overall long-range facility plan is referred to as Project 2012 by Susquehanna Health.
Occupying several city blocks, developing an urban plan which analyzed the land and facilities now owned by the hospital and how they "fit" within the city was critical factor for both the hospital administrators and city officials. The Williamsport Hospital & Medical Center was able to purchase additional land in close proximity to the hospital, which had been designated as a "medical enterprise zone" largely due to the relationships they had created with the neighboring property owners and the community.
With the desire to become a more visible landmark in the fabric of the city, one of the first decisions made was to literally turn the hospital around to face downtown - towards the community - rather than away from it as they have been for many years. Creating a park designed to be a focus point, the new campus will be reconfigured as a "town square" with the new entrance serving as an Open Gateway to the community. This Open Gateway will also be enhanced through the development and upgrading of surrounding arterial roadways and cityscape improvements. These offsite endeavors have been facilitated through a public/private partnership with the City of Williamsport and Susquehanna Health. The partnership will work together with the State and other local public agencies to obtain public financing to fund this "Roadway to Health".
